We’re working hard to make Valleys to Coast an inclusive organisation that understands our tenants’ needs and experiences, and colleague training plays a key role in this.

Last week, Alison Nunnick, Dementia Advisor, joined us to deliver two Dementia Friends information sessions to help us better support people living with dementia.

Five top takeaways from the sessions:

  1. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing
  2. Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain
  3. Dementia is not just about losing your memory
  4. People with dementia can still stay active and involved
  5. Alzheimer’s Society is there for everyone living with dementia

Alison also shared a powerful video that uses a bookcase analogy to explain how dementia works.

How we’re turning understanding into action

After the session, we discussed the ways we’re going to put what we’ve learned into practice, including:

  • Being patient when we’re out in our communities
  • Sign-posting our customers and families to the dementia helpline and website
  • Wearing our Dementia Friends badges and spreading the word about the Dementia Friends initiative

Project Support Officer, Mel Thomas, said: “after this training, I feel much more equipped to support tenants affected by dementia”.
